His style of painting has been described as charming, unique, captivating, calming and well organized. Alan’s fine use of space in his compositions comes from a lifelong love of nature and art, bringing the two together for all to view and enjoy.
Alan was born on January 4th, 1954 in Washington, D. C., and grew up in nearby rural Maryland. His father, having grown up on a farm in Western Maryland, nurtured in him a love, understanding, and respect for all living things around him. This is warmly translated in his paintings, and drawings.
Alan’s interest for art began when he was only six years old and fell in love with drawing in pencil. One of his first drawings in school received an award which inspired him to pursue art first as a hobby and now as a career. He received many awards for his work throughout his years in school and his talents were sought by various committees and organizations in these schools. He was also honored with his own one man show while only in the fifth grade.
Alan Pagenhardt is a self – taught artist, his talent coming from within and not being borrowed from someone else during his development and training. This is what gives his pieces such a unique style. It is his style and his style alone. In his more recent years of painting, Alan has received guidance and inspiration from artist Peter Egeli, a loyal friend and neighbor.
Although he has done work in pastels, charcoal, watercolors, pen and ink, graphite and colored pencils, his preference is acrylic and oils. He truley loves the richness and beauty of these mediums and has chosen scenery and wildlife as his primary subject matter.
Alan has been a member of The North End Gallery in Leonardtown, MD for the last 17 years. He has developed and truly grown as an artist there. It is a cooperative gallery which depends on it’s members to devote their time and skills to run it. In his time spent there Alan has chaired two committees, been on the board of directors and has served as president of the organization.
Much of Alan’s work was commissioned and hangs in homes in Maryland, Virginia, North and South Carolina, Kentucky, Texas, Alaska, Washington, D.C., Florida, New Jersey, New York, Minnesota, Missouri, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Idaho, Ohio, West Virginia, Arizona, California, Puerto Rico, New Foundland and Montreal, Canada..
